01 / THE DETAILS

Identify each indicator by its label

A lit switch may show only that power is being supplied to the outlets. A separate Protected indicator reports the state of the surge-protection function, while a Grounded or wiring-related indicator describes another condition. The colors and meanings vary by product. Read the exact manual and labels before interpreting a red or green light. Belkin publishes model guidance explaining these distinctions, including that a grounded indicator is not the same as a protection indicator.

Take a photograph of the normal indicator state after correct installation. This provides a reference if a light changes later. Do not cover the indicators behind furniture or permanent tape merely because they are bright. If the product's lights are unsuitable for the location, choose an appropriately designed alternative rather than making its status impossible to check.

Keep the model-specific legend nearby if several different protectors are used in the same room; identical light colors can otherwise encourage an incorrect comparison.

02 / THE DETAILS

Treat an expired-protection indication as actionable

Some surge protectors can continue distributing power after their protection function is no longer available; other designs interrupt output. The behavior is product-specific. Follow the manufacturer's instructions when a protection indicator reports failure or expiry. A computer still running through the strip does not prove that surge protection remains active. The convenience of working outlets should not override the device's own status guidance.

Do not open the protector or attempt to replace internal components as a household repair. Use the manufacturer's replacement or service process. If the unit is physically damaged, discolored, loose, or otherwise abnormal, stop using it regardless of whether a status light remains on. Indicators provide useful information, but they are not a reason to ignore visible damage.

03 / THE DETAILS

Keep grounding concerns separate

A grounding or wiring warning can concern the supply outlet rather than the protector's age. Do not use a simple plug adapter to defeat a required ground connection. Consult the product instructions and have a suspect outlet checked by a qualified person. Swapping several protectors into the same questionable outlet may reproduce the same warning without resolving the underlying issue.

If the manufacturer describes a diagnostic or replacement procedure for a properly grounded outlet with an unexpected indicator, follow that model-specific guidance. Avoid treating a generic internet color chart as authoritative. The useful details for support are the product model, indicator labels, observed state, and whether a qualified check has established the outlet's condition.

04 / THE DETAILS

Make replacement straightforward

Keep the model, purchase information, and installation instructions with the desk equipment record. When replacing the protector, reassess socket spacing, cord length, total load, and accessibility rather than buying an identical shape automatically. The desk may have accumulated larger adapters or different equipment since the original installation. A replacement is an opportunity to make the arrangement easier to inspect and use.

After connecting the new unit according to its instructions, confirm the expected indicators and label the device plugs. Check status during ordinary cleaning or after an event that prompts the manufacturer's recommended inspection. Do not rely on a universal calendar lifetime inferred from the joule rating; that rating is not a countdown clock. The model's status, condition, usage, and manufacturer guidance provide the relevant basis for continued use.
